Position Summary:

The Aerospace Industries Association Vice President, Space Systems is responsible for the development of AIA industry policy and budget advocacy positions on Civil, Commercial and National Security Space Programs. This position entails advocating on space issues, developing and articulating industry positions to national stakeholders through media, briefings, Congressional Hearings, conferences, Congressional events and panel discussions.

Specifically, the Vice President for Space Systems is charged with influencing and driving issues, regulations and developments that impact the U.S. space industrial base and workforce. To accomplish these responsibilities, the Vice President for Space Systems leads a team at AIA that works with and supports the space and space-related council, committees and working groups of Member companies within AIA focused on space issues.

Key Responsibilities:

This position reports directly to the CEO and interacts with AIA’s Executive Committee, its Board of Governors, and other member CEOs and senior company representatives.

The Vice President, Space Systems oversees the space policy division that presently includes the Senior Director, National Security Space, and Senior Manager, Space Systems. The Vice President for Space Systems is charged with serving AIA’s external member community, as well as the internal stakeholders who collectively assure the health of AIA through consistent membership renewals and top prospect acquisition. This includes collaborating with cross-departmental teams such as advocacy and outreach, and membership.

The Vice President for Space Systems is responsible for developing industry positions; drafting and refining AIA’s arguments on the various issues and topics under consideration; and in making these viewpoints known to appropriate Federal agencies, including Space Force, NASA, NOAA, DoD, FAA, the White House, the Department of Commerce, and the Intelligence Community, as well as their various bureaus and commissions. Some of these groups may have government, civilian, both domestic and international and/or military officials participating in or observing deliberations.

As the principal liaison to AIA company committees, subcommittees, and task forces, the Vice President for Space Systems works to identify and clarify space policy issues. The Vice President for Space Systems will both exercise thought leadership on long term space policies and also seek to develop industry consensus positions on relevant issues.

The Vice President regularly confers with various civilian and military officials within the Federal government and agencies to gain attention and favorable consideration of AIA’s viewpoint on subjects of current interest.  Arranges and coordinates joint government-industry working groups and project teams within assigned area of responsibility to gain consensus on major issues affecting the aerospace industry.

Occasionally the Vice President will attend or participates in testifying at congressional hearings to advocate for issues relevant to AIA’s space policy strategy regarding legislative considerations and its potential impact on the aerospace and defense industry.  Prepares and presents testimony or assists the legislative affairs staff in drafting testimony for the President and CEO to present at such hearings.

Serves as a central resource person, and as such responds to inquiries from member companies, government officials and the public seeking information and background data and expertise on space policy issues.  These inquiries can range from general questions to highly specific requests that may take days to assemble the required data and background information.

Qualifications and Experience:

Experience Required

  • Demonstrated self-starter with the ability to thrive in a fast-moving environment.
  • An experienced professional in space and space-related policies, regulation and legislation.
  • An understanding of the issues impacting the space industry domestically and internationally and a vision for how to advance and resolve these issues.
  • Experience as part of a management team or in a management role in government, an association, law or consulting practice, or aerospace-related corporation.
  • Ability to effectively develop and advocate for the vision, programs, and value of AIA membership to current and potential members in space and space policy.
  • A vision and the ability to translate that vision into programs addressing the current and future issues relevant to companies operating in the space industry, including new and emerging markets.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a team player while producing the highest caliber work product in a timely manner.
  • Experience in developing and managing departmental budgets.
  • Superb interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work collegially with others and with the highest standards of integrity.
  • Demonstrated experience and success in the use of technology as a management tool.

Education:

Position Summary:

The Senior Director, Acquisition Policy supports the Vice President for National Security Policy on all matters relating to DOD acquisition and procurement and represents AIA on these and related issues to AIA membership, outside organizations, the Department of Defense (DOD) and other executive branch agencies, and Congressional committees and member offices.

Building on their experience, judgment, and network, the incumbent works with and seeks input from member companies, councils, and committees, and is responsible for monitoring, analyzing, proposing, and advocating policies concerning defense acquisition and procurement-related practices; regulations and legislation and their implementation; and other related areas.

Core Duties:

The Senior Director, Acquisition Policy serves as AIA’s primary defense contracting and acquisition policy resource and responds to inquiries from member companies, government officials, military personnel, the public, and the press.  These inquiries may range from general questions to highly technical requests requiring significant effort to assemble data and related background information.  The incumbent also may prepare Congressional testimony on association positions for AIA leaders.

The Senior Director, Acquisition Policy maintains regular contact with government officials and representatives of the Department of Defense, Executive Branch agencies, and other offices.  The incumbent may accompany the Vice President for National Security Policy and other senior AIA leaders to meet with senior Administration officials, members of Congress and staff, AIA member company CEOs and other executives, and other senior individuals in and out of government.

The Senior Director, Acquisition Policy may be called upon to present the Association’s views orally and in writing to government and industry officials and to the media; to represent the Association in coalitions that are formed to present a unified approach on national security policy issues of mutual interest; and to represent AIA positions as a spokesperson at conferences and seminars.  The incumbent will contribute articles and news items to AIA publications, highlighting issues and developments falling within the NSP division’s domain, and prepare summaries of such issues for use during AIA or outside meetings.

The Senior Director, Acquisition Policy will support the Vice President for National Security Policy by leading and coordinating the activities of AIA’s acquisition-focused councils, committees and working groups, primarily the Acquisition Policy Council, Cost Principles Committee, Contract Management Committee, Aerospace and Defense Controllers Committee, Cash Flow Committee, and others.

Key Responsibilities: 

Policy Leadership 40%

  • Representing AIA to all stakeholders across the federal acquisition and contracting communities.
  • Leading AIA input to, comments on, and communications about all acquisition regulatory actions, such as acquisition regulations, contract actions, executive orders, guidance memoranda, and other federal rules and regulations affecting government contracting.
  • Analyzing industry challenges and opportunities and synthesizing concepts and ideas coming from government contacts and AIA’s council, committee and working group activities into cohesive policy positions.

Collaboration & Advocacy 40%

  • Advocating for the association’s acquisition priorities and agenda in collaboration with internal AIA staff, including senior directors for Communications, Legislative Affairs, Civil Aviation, Space Systems, and other divisions.
  • Providing regular input and advisory support to the Washington Procurement Committee and informing AIA legislative goals and activities.
  • Building industry consensus among member companies on relevant and timely defense industry topics and issues and serving as staff liaison to relevant internal and external groups.

Industry Activities 20%

  • Overseeing arrangements and content for periodic council and committee meetings (including developing the agenda, assembling background information and materials, arranging for speakers and other participants, and ensuring that minutes are prepared), and managing expenses associated with all council and committee meetings.
  • Assisting with the planning and execution of major association events, including Executive Committee and Washington Representatives meetings, and semi-annual Board of Governors meetings,
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

Experience Required

  • The Senior Director, Acquisition Policy must be a known and respected practitioner in the defense acquisition community, with focused experience in defense contracting policies and practices.
  • The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of the U.S and international defense ecosystem, with a minimum of 12 years of experience in the Department of Defense, the U.S. Congress, a DoD supplier, and/or a relevant trade association.
  • The combination of both industry and DoD experience is highly valued.
  • The incumbent must have excellent writing, research, speaking ability, superior attention to detail, and be skilled at working within large groups with divergent views to build consensus.

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Specialized acquisition credentials and certifications, and/or a Juris Doctor or Master degree with contracting, business, or national security concentration are preferred.

Position Summary:

The Senior Director of Legislative Affairs supports development of the Association’s legislative program, communication of the aerospace and defense (A&D) industry’s concerns and priorities to Congress, support for AIA events and informational sessions on Capitol Hill, and apprising AIA members of congressional actions and their impacts to the A&D industry. The position is responsible for monitoring and reporting on pending legislation affecting the industry on a broad range of aerospace and defense issues, recommending and implementing AIA positions and strategies in their regard, and advocating those positions before Congress. The Senior Director will manage the AIA legislative team and their work in the absence of the Vice President, Legislative Affairs. It is expected that this position will involve registration and reporting as a federal lobbyist, as required by law, but not registration as a lobbyist before any state.

Key Responsibilities:

This position reports directly to the Vice President, Legislative Affairs, and provides legislative support to more than one AIA policy division. Core duties and responsibilities are as follows:

  • Monitors Congressional activity pertaining to defense and international activities and regulatory actions stemming from legislative initiatives. Provides timely feedback to AIA members; and recommends AIA positions and strategies for AIA’s legislative advocacy.
  • Represents AIA at regular meetings of industry and agencies on specific legislative and regulatory activities. Arranges congressional briefings and coordinates industry presentations and responses with member company representatives.
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with Congressional staff and Members of Congress; meets regularly with Congressional Members and staff, both independently and with others.
  • Works closely with AIA member senior-level company representatives, industry coalitions, and other associations to develop, promulgate and advance industry positions. Serves as the coordinating director for Washington Procurement and International Legislative Committee activities.
  • Coordinates with other staff and assists in preparation of AIA activities at internal and external strategic calendar events.  May include international air shows, AIA Board of Governors meetings, Congressional briefings or receptions, and other events as needed.
  • Reviews and contributes to articles, blogs, reports, electronic communications, and other written materials reporting on legislation and advancing industry positions.
  • Drafts Congressional testimony and statements/letters for the record to be presented by AIA executives, and coordinates AIA’s Congressional hearing activities to ensure successful and responsive presentations.
  • Leads the legislative staff in the absence of the VP, Legislative Affairs.

Qualifications and Experience:

Experience Required

  • Minimum of 6 years’ experience on Capitol Hill or 8 years of relevant legislative experience (international trade and/or defense experience preferred).
  • In-depth and demonstrated knowledge of the federal legislative process;
  • Excellent interpersonal, research, and communications skills (verbal and written); and
  • Proven skills in making presentations before small and large groups.
  • Ability to execute work and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven ability to consistently make sound judgments.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficient in applicable technology programs and applications.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a highly collaborative environment while developing and maintaining positive work relationships.

Position Summary:

The Senior Director of Corporate Events is a seasoned expert with 8 – 10 years of experience in meetings, conferences, event marketing and sponsorship.  This position is primarily responsible for the planning and execution of AIA’s strategic corporate level events to achieve association goals and maximize profit.  This critical position reports directly to the Senior Vice President, Operations.

Key Responsibilities: 

Strategic Planning (25%)

  • Develop an annual Corporate Events strategic plan that aligns to the AIA’s overarching strategic priorities
  • Employ a collaborative process utilizing inputs from AIA’s division leaders
  • Focus the strategic plan on achieving member retention and recruitment.
  • Develop annual quantitative and qualitative goals for Corporate Events.
  • Identify risks and success factors.
  • Gain support and buy-in from leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Communicate the plan broadly and effectively.

Execution and Measurement (50%)

  • Execute AIA’s twenty-one corporate level meetings and conferences, including: Executive Committee board meetings, Board of Governors and Membership meetings, Supplier Management Council meetings, International Air Shows, and provides support for internal company-wide events.
  • Ensure quality control of all event contract activities, budgets, and deliverables.
  • Manage the financial and operational aspects of event budgets, including forecasting and budget analyses.
  • Negotiate hotel contracts, including room blocks, food and beverage minimum, audio visual, and concessions to ensure AIA is getting the most financial benefit and is minimizing risks.
  • Negotiate and manage vendor contracts (e.g., private venues, registration platforms, virtual meeting software, etc.) and identify cost savings.
  • Oversee site selection, all event logistics, registration, transportation, signage orders, general session production décor, event security, staff, vendor, speaker management, VIP guest hotel arrangements, final bill review, payment, and post conference survey review.
  • Coordinate with the Communications team to write and develop supporting marketing material and create marketing plans for each individual event.
  • Oversee the creation and execution of the events website, registration software, and mobile event app.
  • Develop and sell competitive sponsorship packages that benefit both AIA and its members.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with key internal and external stakeholders and clients, including department heads, planning committee members, Conventions and Visitors Bureaus (CVB), hotel and venue personnel.
  • Manage logistics and participate in pre-event calls for government, industry, and paid speakers.
  • Develop a comprehensive run of show, event timelines, deliverables, and milestones for internal stakeholders.
  • Serve as liaison to AIA committees and member companies for their attendance and participation at AIA’s signature events.
  • Define clear roles and responsibilities for AIA staff and contractors onsite, supervise and evaluate junior staff at conferences.
  • Support the success of virtual programs and webinars.

Leadership and Collaboration (25%)

  • Manage, mentor, and motivate Corporate Events team members.

The Director, Industrial Base Policy supports the Vice President for National Security Policy on all matters relating to DOD industrial policy and procurement, and represents AIA on these and related issues to AIA membership, outside organizations, the Department of Defense (DOD) and other executive branch agencies, and Congressional committees and member offices.

The Director, Industrial Base Policy engages with AIA staff, member companies, councils, and committees, and is responsible for monitoring, analyzing, proposing, and advocating policies concerning defense industrial policy and procurement-related practices, the implementation of relevant regulations and legislation and their implementation, and other related areas.

Core Duties:

They will focus on the objectives driven by the National Defense Strategy’s emphasis on Great Power Competition and innovation – such as supply chain security, assured access to materials and resources, and advanced technology (artificial intelligence, microelectronics, digital engineering, unmanned systems, hypersonics, etc.) – and will engage with non-traditional providers to broaden AIA’s membership and enhance our impact on policy.  The Director, Industrial Base Policy will further ensure that AIA’s engagement in the national security policy community is coordinated across AIA councils and committees (primarily the Defense Policy Council, Acquisition Policy Council, Contract Management Committee, Intellectual Property Committee, Cybersecurity Committee, and Washington Procurement Committee), and across other AIA divisions (primarily the Communications, International Affairs, Space, and Legislative Affairs divisions).

Key Responsibilities:

Policy Leadership 30%

  • Crafting AIA industrial policy positions that address the development and sustainment of the Defense Industrial Base (DIB) and promote innovation, secure and resilient supply chains, and a public perception of the DIB as a respected institution and source of American strength.
  • Maintaining liaison with trade associations, policy organizations, and academic institutions to improve AIA’s awareness of, and influence on, U.S. national security policy.
  • Analyzing industry challenges and opportunities to prompt deliberations and policy actions.
  • Synthesizing concepts and ideas coming from government contacts to provide insight into future defense and aerospace developments.

Collaboration & Advocacy 50%

  • Leading AIA advocacy efforts and engagement with the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Industrial Base Policy, and other federal organizations and agencies that impact defense industrial base policies.
  • Collaborating with AIA’s Communications division and other AIA divisions to develop stakeholder education materials and webinars regarding various DIB topics, including Industrial organization, industry workforce, historical industrial trends, and capital allocation decisions that industry executives make as part of their fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Building industry consensus among member companies on relevant and timely topics and issues, and serving as staff liaison to relevant internal and external groups.
  • Organizing and executing periodic council and committee meetings, including developing the agenda, assembling background information and materials, arranging for speakers and other participants, ensuring that minutes are prepared, and managing associated expenses.

Industry Activities 20%

  • Assisting with the planning and execution of major association events, including Executive Committee and Washington Representatives meetings, semi-annual Board of Governors meetings, periodic meetings with senior government officials.

Position Summary:

Key Responsibilities:

Event Management (85%)

As the Coordinator, American Rocketry Challenge & Program Outreach, you’ll play a pivotal role in the American Rocketry Challenge—the world’s largest student rocket contest and the aerospace and defense industry’s signature STEM program. Your work will empower over 5,000 middle and high school students to design, build, and launch model rockets, fostering hands-on experience in solving engineering problems.   • Collaborate with other division Coordinators/Senior Coordinators on organization-wide needs on an as needed basis, to include planning/execution of meetings or events led by other divisions within AIA.
  • Participate in special projects, focus groups, and other assignments as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

Minimum Requirements:

  • Native understanding and extensive work within the Microsoft Office environment (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Sharepoint) is required
  • Strong oral and written communications skills (concise, timely, positive nature)
  • Ability to work under time pressure to meet deadlines and capability to quickly flex to changes in priorities. In addition, be flexible where extra hours are needed without always being asked
  • A team player attitude, with dynamic customer service, and proven ability to respond to internal and external requests, from all levels of leadership, for assistance promptly, professionally, and effectively
  • Ability to independently prioritize, multi-task duties, and collaborate across AIA. In addition, possesses well-developed interpersonal and time management skills
  • Natural desire to take ownership to contribute to the broader team.
  • Motivated, “can-do” attitude that contributes to the mission of the organization and the industry
  • Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism, maturity, and trust

Desired Skills/Experience:

  • 1-2 years’ of relevant operational, administrative, or project management experience
  • College or Associates degree, or equivalent work experience, ideally in a relevant field such as political science, public affairs/policy, business/economics, journalism/communications, English, preferred
  • Interest and experience with Capitol Hill and the legislative landscape and/or a strong background in communications/public relations/public affairs
  • Knowledge of the media landscape and an eye for breaking, relevant news
  • Experience with PhotoShop, Canva, or other design programs
  • Experience conducting and presenting research
  • Experience managing to a principal and/or senior leadership
  • Passion for the American aerospace and defense industry
